Intent
At Gainsborough Primary School, we believe that art inspires creativity, imagination and inventiveness. We believe that art gives our pupils the skills, concepts and knowledge necessary for them to engage and express responses to ideas and experiences. It fires their imagination and is a fundamental means of personal expression. They experience art to raise awareness of key issues, immediate art that expresses different cultures and use art to their own views.
At Gainsborough, pupils are encouraged to experiment with and explore their ideas, use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials, techniques and processes. We believe every child has an inner artist waiting to be unveiled!
Implementation
Art lessons are taught weekly by our in-house art teacher, providing pupils with regular opportunities to develop their creativity, skills, and artistic confidence. Lessons are progressive across the year groups, with pupils building on prior knowledge in a range of media including drawing, painting, collage, textiles, and sculpture. Each year group studies key artists across a variety of genres, ensuring exposure to diverse styles and techniques.
Art learning is linked to history and geography topics where appropriate, creating meaningful cross-curricular connections. Children recreate art through history and art that spans the globe, learning about why and how people have made art from a variety of periods in time and a variety of cultures.
Children are given the opportunity to talk, reflect and appreciate others’ and their own art work. Pupils are given clear guidance on skills through excellent teacher modelling and are given the opportunity to experiment for themselves.
Artwork is celebrated through the school’s displays, Instagram account and website for others to see and for children to share with their families.
Impact
Art and design is loved by teachers and pupils across the school. Through our art curriculum, pupils develop creativity, technical skills, and confidence across drawing, painting, collage, textiles, and sculpture, building progressively each year. They are able to reflect on their own work and set personal goals, demonstrating analytical thinking.
Regular teaching by our in-house art teacher ensures cross-curricular links to history and geography and knowledge of key artists across genres. Pupils experiment with ideas, including sustainable materials, producing work that shows growing independence, creativity and critical evaluation skills. Pupils can use technical vocabulary accurately and are confident in analysing their work and giving their opinion on their own work and other works of art.
