Intent
At Gainsborough, our PSHE curriculum supports children’s personal development, emotional wellbeing, and understanding of the world around them. We aim to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills, and values to become confident, respectful, and responsible individuals. Our PSHE offer is inclusive, trauma-informed, and supports all pupils, including those with SEND, to thrive in modern Britain. https://jigsawpshe.online/
Implementation
We follow the Jigsaw PSHE scheme from Nursery to Year 6, delivering weekly lessons through six key themes: Being Me, Celebrating Difference, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships, and Changing Me. Lessons build emotional literacy, resilience, and social skills through structured activities and discussions. PSHE is enriched through assemblies, themed weeks, pupil voice, and links to British Values and the UNCRC Rights of the Child.
The six half-termly Puzzles are:
- Being Me in My World: Focuses on self-identity, belonging, rights and responsibilities, and classroom charters.
- Celebrating Difference: Covers anti-bullying (including cyber and homophobic bullying), diversity, and respect for different cultures and abilities.
- Dreams and Goals: Emphasises goal-setting, personal aspirations, and working together.
- Healthy Me: Addresses physical and mental health, healthy lifestyles, nutrition, and substance education (age-appropriate).
- Relationships: Explores friendship, family dynamics, conflict resolution, communication skills, and bereavement.
- Changing Me: Covers age-appropriate sex and relationships education (RSE), puberty, and coping positively with change and transition.
Impact
Through our PSHE curriculum, pupils develop the confidence, resilience, and emotional literacy needed to navigate challenges and build positive relationships. They show respect for others, celebrate diversity, and understand how to keep themselves physically and emotionally safe. Regular pupil voice, reflective activities, and staff observations show that children are becoming thoughtful, informed, and active citizens—both within the school and in the wider community. Our inclusive and trauma-informed approach ensures all children, including those with SEND or additional needs, feel valued, supported, and ready for their next stage in life.
