Our outdoor space ‘The Oasis’ is a valued extension of our learning environment, carefully designed to provide pupils with meaningful opportunities to explore, discover, and connect with the natural world. It is a place where curiosity is encouraged, creativity is nurtured and learning comes alive in ways that cannot always be replicated indoors.
We are proud to offer all children the chance to take part in growing and planting activities, helping them to develop a strong sense of responsibility, patience and care. Through these experiences, pupils gain a deeper understanding of sustainability, food production and the importance of protecting our environment. They learn not only how things grow, but also why nurturing the natural world matters for their future.
Outdoor learning is thoughtfully embedded across our curriculum and plays a particularly important role in science. Pupils are given regular opportunities to investigate, observe, question and apply their knowledge in real-life contexts. Whether they are studying habitats, seasonal changes or life cycles, the outdoor environment provides a dynamic setting that deepens understanding and makes learning memorable.
Our Forest School programme is a key part of this approach, offering children the chance to learn in a hands-on, nature-rich setting over time. Through carefully planned sessions, pupils build confidence, resilience, independence and teamwork skills. They are encouraged to take appropriate risks, solve problems and reflect on their experiences, fostering both personal growth and a strong sense of achievement.
At Gainsborough, we are committed to ensuring that every child benefits from high-quality outdoor learning experiences. We believe these opportunities not only enhance academic learning but also support wellbeing, promote physical activity and nurture a lifelong appreciation for the environment. By learning in and from nature, our pupils develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes they need to thrive both now and in the future.
