MFL: Spanish

Spanish learning is based on practical communication and instilling a passion for language learning. Learning a new language is key to becoming part of the global community and we ensure that our pupils have a solid foundation for this journey.

Intent

At Gainsborough Community Primary School, we are committed to delivering an engaging and ambitious Spanish curriculum that inspires curiosity, confidence and a love of language learning. We believe that learning a modern foreign language equips pupils with valuable communication skills and helps them to develop a deeper understanding of the wider world and different cultures.

Our Spanish curriculum is designed to broaden pupils’ horizons and encourage respect and appreciation for linguistic and cultural diversity. By learning Spanish, children develop the confidence to communicate in another language, both orally and in writing, and gain a strong foundation for future language learning in secondary school and beyond.

We recognise and celebrate the rich range of languages spoken within our school community and aim to foster a positive attitude towards multilingualism, global citizenship and effective communication. Through Spanish, pupils are encouraged to explore cultural traditions, customs and everyday life in Spanish-speaking countries.

Implementation

Spanish is taught weekly across Key Stage 2 through carefully structured and progressive lessons. Our curriculum follows a sequenced scheme of work which builds knowledge and skills over time, ensuring that pupils revisit and deepen their learning regularly. Lessons are designed to be interactive, purposeful and accessible to all learners.

Teaching focuses on the three key pillars of language learning: phonics, vocabulary and grammar. Pupils are explicitly taught how Spanish sounds link to spelling patterns, enabling them to pronounce new words accurately and confidently. Vocabulary is introduced in meaningful contexts and regularly practised through speaking, listening, reading and writing activities.

Grammar is taught in a clear and age-appropriate way, helping pupils understand how language is structured and how to apply this knowledge when forming their own sentences. Comparisons are made between English and Spanish to strengthen understanding and support transfer of skills across languages.

A range of engaging strategies are used to support learning, including songs, rhymes, games, role-play, stories and conversational practice. Pupils are encouraged to rehearse language frequently and apply their learning in real-life contexts such as short dialogues, descriptions and simple written tasks.

Impact

Pupils at Gainsborough develop confidence and enthusiasm in using Spanish, with a growing ability to understand, speak, read and write simple language independently. Progress is monitored regularly through observation of speaking activities, written work and short assessment tasks linked to key learning objectives.

Assessment opportunities throughout the year allow pupils to demonstrate their developing language skills across listening, speaking, reading and writing. Teachers use this information to adapt teaching and provide targeted support where needed.

Over time, pupils build a secure foundation of vocabulary, grammatical understanding and pronunciation, enabling them to communicate with increasing accuracy and fluency. They leave Key Stage 2 well-prepared for further language learning, with a positive attitude towards languages and an appreciation of different cultures.
