Physical Education

Physical Education is taught across the school by specialist coaches from BADU Sports. Using sports coaches means that our children are able to increase their knowledge regarding the rules of sports and understand the importance of team work and how fitness affects the body. We place a huge importance on children finding enjoyment in sports and that everyone displays high levels of sportsmanship when faced with challenges.

Our Intent

At Gainsborough Community Primary School, our intent for Physical Education is to provide all children with a high-quality, broad and balanced PE curriculum that develops physical confidence, promotes healthy lifestyles, and nurtures a lifelong love of movement.

We aim to ensure that pupils experience a wide range of physical activities that support their physical, social and emotional development, while building essential life skills such as teamwork, resilience, respect and perseverance. Through both individual challenges and competitive sport, children are encouraged to challenge themselves, celebrate success, and develop positive attitudes towards physical activity.

Key aspects of our PE intent include:

  • Developing physical competence – enabling pupils to perform a wide range of fundamental movement skills and apply them confidently across different sports and activities
  • Promoting healthy lifestyles – helping children understand the importance of regular physical activity for physical and mental wellbeing
  • Building social and emotional skills – using PE to develop cooperation, communication, leadership and positive sportsmanship
  • Providing opportunities for competition – encouraging fair play, resilience and teamwork through intra- and inter-school sport
  • Accessibility for all – adapting lessons to meet diverse needs and abilities so every child can participate and succeed
  • Encouraging enjoyment – making PE fun, inclusive and engaging to foster a positive relationship with physical activity

Our Implementation

PE at Gainsborough is delivered through a structured, progressive curriculum from Nursery to Year 6, supported by a specialist PE coach from BADU Sports, working alongside class teachers. This partnership strengthens teaching quality, ensures subject expertise, and supports staff development.

The BADU PE curriculum provides:

  • Regular fitness and athletics units, including preparation for Sports Day
  • Inclusive approaches that support children of all abilities to achieve and feel successful

Lessons are carefully sequenced across the year to build skills over time, ensuring pupils revisit and apply learning in different contexts. In addition to curriculum PE, pupils have opportunities to:
